Rant number 209
Past the big 300 mark - I make that 65 to go - the downward slope.
Anyway - back to the present.
Today on the news - they proudly announced that the recession in the UK is over with.
Don't you feel better now? No me neither.
The recession has been a constant news story for years now.
First it was: the recession is coming
Then: the recession is going to be here soon
Then: its arrived
Then: crap its bad
Then: its got a bit better
Then: its worse
etc. etc. until today.
I may be no expert in these matters - but it strikes me that the worse is far from over. They have quantified that the recession has ended because over the last quarter the GDP grew a little. We did however, have rather a boost from the olympics this summer - making continued growth this quarter seem less than certain.
Also, the whole thing about this being good news for us normal folks seems to be somewhat of a naive attitude.
If the economy has grown and if it continues to do so - this will be by continuing in the current vain of austerity and robbing the poor to prop up the rich.
They aren't going to start giving you more money - cutting taxes, cutting duty, spending more money on public services or actually giving you a worthwhile pension. They're just going to keep on rinsing you for all you've got and watching you work until you die.
So what do I think of the end of recession?
I think its fucking irrelevant.

Rant 214 1/8/12 Subject: Cheating Japanese Gymnasts
Rant number 214
An olympic rant then. Bound to happen sooner or later wasn't it?
For anyone hidden under a rock not watching the Olympics, they've been pretty good so far. The brits have won a respectable amount of medals and have far from disgraced themselves.
Particularly, our Gymnasts did well, winning themselves a bronze medal and breaking a hundred years slump in this discipline. My heartiest congratulations go to them. They fought hard and won well.
Except, they won a silver medal, not a bronze.
Then the Japanese protested - and got given the silver medal.
Now, lets put things in context:
I don't have a great deal of expertise in gymnastics, or in most sports. We in fact discussed last week at work - how you could mark something this subjective.
What I saw however, from the Japanese Gymnast was a dismount that looked as crap as one I could have done! If it's obvious to me that its crap, surely there is no protest that can be made?
But the stupid bloody officials took it lying down, and the British Gymnasts were too proud to counter-protest.
If the Japanese had any shame, they should be falling on their fucking swords!
If you don't believe me, go to: http://gymnasticscoaching.com/new/2012/07/uchimuras-pommel-dismount
and watch the bugger fall in a most ungraceful and certainly unintentional way.
Now tell me I'm just being biased because its our gymnasts that have lost out?
What a disgusting way to cheat your way to their silver medals. I hope that their pride comes before a fall. Preferably from a great height.
Yes, our team took it well, but inside they must be gutted. After all that work - to be cheated. It makes me bloody sick!
And as for the officials who let it happen. Don't even get me started.
If nothing else, the Olympics should be about honour. An honour to be involved, an honour to win a medal. The Japanese have shat all over that with their disgusting cheating ways.
I hope they feel ashamed of themselves. If they had any balls or scruples, they should give those medals back!
I really hope they don't think they are in the right and that they can't sleep at night. They deserve no less!

Rant 148 27/5/12 Subject: Olympics tickets
Rant number 148
So anyone not hiding under a rock for the last year or two, will be aware that we are hosting the olympics. Lets face it, its been on the news in one way or another for pretty much forever - particularly the torch over the last couple of weeks.
Now, one thing that really does seem to have been a bit of a mess about it all is the tickets situation. The messy lottery of getting the tickets for the best events was dealt with with the expected amount of useless faff. Like many things, if you have enough money to buy the high end tickets - you can see what you want, if not - you get left with the scraps.
I am not a great one for sports at the best of times however, the olympics has got a certain amount of events that I'd like to see.
Unfortunately, the same ones that other people like to see.
The 100m sprinting finals for instance: An event that shows off the power of men trained to their physical peak.
Or the lady's beach volleyball: An event that its hard not to enjoy watching as a man.
The thing is though that these events were always the most expensive - with the fewest cheaper tickets: surprise surprise.
Price really shouldn't come into it in the way it has. If the government wants to endear us into feeling national spirit over the games - they really shouldn't price us out of them. Not to mention that - to watch an event - I would need to buy the ticket, and pay for transport & accommodation. It sounds trite - but to me it would just feel like another tax.
I'm settle for watching the events I can on TV, at home or down the pub - beer in hand - just like I would if it was another country.
Oh well...
