Rant 136 15/5/12 Subject: Repair costs (and their tendancy to breed)

Rant number 136

Routine maintenance is an occupational hazard of owning a car. There is no avoiding it.
From new, cars begin to gradually eat bits of themselves until they fall to bits. All you can do is stem the ever increasing tide of this, by building a dam...

Out of money

Handy people, who know cars have this sorted. They can get the parts they need and fit them themselves. I really wish I was once of those people - but I'm not.

I can fix your computer, your bike, your jewellery & various other things. I know how an internal combustion engine works even. But can I do anything more advanced that filling up my oil and changing a tyre?

Can I bollucks.

This means that I have to take it to a garage and ask them nicely to sort my problems out.

This time, my brake pads needed replacing at the front of my car. In truth they have been low since I got my car (looking at service history etc, they had not been changed from new in her 70,000 miles) so it was well overdue.

I work next to a small garage who have done bits and bobs for me in the past and who I trust - so I booked in with them to have the front pads done for a very reasonable £45.

The big day came, and I handed over the keys to them to get the brakes sorted.

I'm sure you can see whats coming can't you?

The door went and the guy was there, not with my keys but with a slip of paper in his hand. A good sign this was not.

To cut a story short, not only my pads needed doing but also my discs needed replacing. Then to add insult to injury, it was identified that there was a fault with one of my brake callipers too.

From £45, to £171 in a few hours. Bloody fabulous.

That's some serious bloody increase. Still - the cars far better for it for now, crossed fingers that will be it for a while.

Rant over.
